Located by fjord Hrútafjörður this north-western Iceland property is next to the Ring Road. As well as being an ideal pit stop on the way between the North and South, it’s a great place to stay if you want to explore the Húnaþing region, the Húnaflói bay’s west coast, or the regions near Breiðafjörður fjord. Nearby hiking routes

The hotel is close to the head of Hrútafjörður fjord on the west side of a moor where you’ll find a number of ponds and small lakes. One of the better-known salmon rivers, Hrútafjarðará, meets the sea close to the hotel, after journeying through the highlands. The hike along the river is quite nice, following a trail from farm Óspaksstaðir (6 km / 3.7 mi) to waterfall Réttarfoss. Close to farm Brandagil (2 km / 1.2 mi) you’ll find a hike along old trails over ridge Hrútafjarðarháls, and to farm Húki in Miðfjörður fjord (9 km / 5.5 mi). It’s a beautiful route for hikers who want to spend a peaceful day out in nature, enjoying the view.

In the footsteps of heroes and trolls

You’ll find many interesting attractions in the nearest regions east of Hrútafjörður fjord, as well as on the peninsula that separates Hrútafjörður from Miðfjörður and Víðidalur valley. One of the Saga’s more famous heroes, Grettir the Strong, was born on the farm Bjarg in Miðfjörður, where there’s a memorial in honour of his mother. Grettir’s memorial is located in village Laugabakki. In valley Víðidalur, you’ll find Kolugljúfur canyons, named after troll Kola. The canyons are about 1-km-long (0.6 mi) and about 20 – 25 metres deep, lined by beautiful waterfalls.

Seals and ocean cliff Hvítserkur

By the Vatnsnes shore, you’ll find one of the biggest and most accessible seal colonies in Iceland. You can get quite close to the seals and get great photographs of them in their natural environment. By farms Illugastaðir, Svalbarði and Ósar, you can enjoy your day of seal watching at specially built lookouts. Learn more about seals and seal hunting at Iceland’s Seal Centre in village Hvammstangi. By the Ring Road in Vatnsnes you’ll find two remarkable natural constructions, namely Borgarvirki and Hvítserkur, a peculiar 15-metre-high ocean cliff, filed down by powerful ocean waves.

Other ideas include Bike rental, Fishing in Hvammstangi (34km) which is also the nearest village with a pool and shops. You can also do riding tours from Gauksmýri (33 km), go hiking or visit the District museum at Reykir (12 km).
